  1. We got an early start to Florida this morning. We got off at 5 AM and landed at Milan TN before 8 AM. Spent some time with Brad, owner of the paint/body/ interior shop making decisions on a ton of questions on my Lancair. We were off before 9:30 and landed at Spruce Creek FL 2 1/2 hours later. At least we saw some tailwinds this trip down. A couple pictures near Chicago as the sun rose and a bit of tailwind on the TN to Florida leg. Tom

  2. Best post in the whole damn thread, IMHO. Those that think their PPI/annual fee entitles them to free repairs regardless of what is later found are really looking for a cheap "extended warranty" Not the way it works. And, if pushed we may find ourselves without mechanics even willing to touch our 40 year old planes. Be careful what you demand.

  4. I'm heading to our Spruce Creek Air park home tomorrow and would be open to visitors wanting to see the most awesome air park in the world. We should get in there tomorrow afternoon and can host, my wife's schedule provided, if interested. Spruce Creek is about 10 miles south of Daytona Beach and is a gated private air park, open to visitors only by invite (well, there is one other option), but getting a golf cart tour of the premises is, by far, the way to go. Previous visitors are welcome too (Hector, Alex, Steve). Best to text me first, as I don't usually answer phone calls coming from someone not in my contacts list. I will try to monitor this post too in the event there is any interest. Disclosure, I will have the slow plane down there this time (my Mooney Rocket), as the "other one" is at the paint shop in Tennessee. Tom

  5. Leaving the Washington DC area I can file direct but I always get a full route departure clearance. Then about 50 miles out ATC usually clears me direct to destination. Heading home I can file “Kansas direct Maryland” and get it from ATC. Then, about 100 miles from home comes the expected “I have an amendment to your route” call I have no beef with ATC. They’re helpful and seem to try to give me what I request. The Dick Rochfort rules for ATC communication: 1. Tell ATC what you would prefer 2. Tell them what you will accept 3. Everything else, you tell them “unable” To which I add “do what you told them you would do”

  6. Sitting here on SkyVector working on a flight plan from Austin to Churchill Canada for the first couple of weeks of July. We'll likely stop in your area and would love to see that fire breathing Lancair if you're there. More than 90% of the flights in my Mooney qualify as cross countries. That's the whole purpose of these airplanes, right?

  7. Drive???????? Are you kidding? We're pilots! Good job Mike! Makes my 5 hour trip tomorrow to Florida, via Milan TN to check on my Lancair paint project, at about the same distant, look not so painful. Nice to see other pilots actually flying cross country flights! Tom

  8. And before anyone says I’m losing my edge stopping for gas, it’s only because gas at KTKX is really cheap and crazy expensive at Addison. I have enough left to make it to Addison but then I’d have to pay $6.80 for 85 gallons instead of $3.38! Jose may have some crackpot ideas about wd40, pissing on his plane, and stuff but he sure got these long range tanks right!

  9. Without x-ray vision how would he or any shop know that it needs to be overhauled without even opening it up and looking at it first? Why not just inspect it and repair it as necessary? On an overhaul there are mandatory parts that must be replaced even though they may be fine.

  10. When the old foam on my front seats was replaced with the confor foam those springs were removed and left out. The seats are so much more comfortable now. I would like to get to the back seat as well, but then I never sit back there and I haven't heard complaints from my son...

  11. I suspect most of the stories about Mooney's being cramped have to do with ingress/egress. Once you're in, the cabin is normal sized and leg room is actually far superior to 172's and Cherokee's. I have to sit all the way forward to reach the pedals, and when my wife is all the way back she complains she has to wave at me. Good luck!

  12. Be glad to have you stop by. The Lancair should be in new paint and have the interior done. Will have to get you a ride in it! Tom

  14. If you decide to head up let me know. I’m going to need a fuel stop in Thompson, Manitoba because of my tiny tanks but my 500 is packed and ready for some migratory bird photography. Only upgrade I really miss is the LR tanks to explore like @201er although my wife would never ok a 10 hr flight without a stand up restroom and a endless wine glass.

  16. You are right on that your typical 100K sub-limits don’t offer much protection. After the lawyers 33k that leaves 66k for plaintiffs. Not much motivation there for them to settle. Personally I carry 1mil smooth and will try to go to 2 mil smooth next month at renewal if I can get it. I know I pay extra for it but it’s worth it.

  17. As I mentioned, I file DIRECT virtually every time I file IFR. I get it about 80% of the time. But even if I get it, I will often get an "amendment to my route" at some point during the flight. This is often to route me around restricted or military airspace, or around a busy arrival or departure corridor. But even then, it's common for the amendment to be "direct to waypoint/gps fix, then direct destination". Of course I live and start most of my flights out of Texas where there is lots of room. But there is also lots of military airspace. I'm sure guys flying in other, more congested area's of the country are given airways to follow more often. I almost never get assigned an airway to fly.

  18. Anyone use the storm app where you can select the reflectivity angle ? It’s pretty cool and doesn’t seem to involve the composite time. I’ll have to dig back but one day I was sitting in schenley Park in Pittsburgh as a line of storms was moving through. I compared Mark 1 eyeballs to storm to foreflight and they updated in that order ... Of course the future of radar for all the aircraft that don’t have onboard radar is whenever we get reliable internet in flight and can get hold of a live / raw radar stream.

  19. You'll have to pay an amount comparable to your actual doctor so that the A&P can purchase malpractice insurance, just like your actual doctor. And he probably won't release your airplane back to you after an annual inspection unless every single discrepancy, no matter how trivial, is repaired with brand new factory parts in order for him to satisfy his insurance company. And then you'll complain that his prices are too high and you, his only customer, will take your airplane to someone else.

  20. We were planing on a Churchill trip this past summer. Then my little CO incident destroyed my plane and we didn't get to go. Maybe this year. Cheers, Dan

  21. Michael, You do have the single piece windshield but not the 201 style. So you still have the acces panels in front of the windshield. This gives a little better access for wiring than the later Mooneys. Keep us all posted on the panel upgrade progress. Cheers, Dan

  26. I added firesheild to my hoses from the firewall to the cooler as they pass below the exhaust stack and get hard and brittle in a short time. For that the adels need to be larger in diameter to account for the firesheild.

  29. Why do you need an STC to put parts on the airplane when those parts are in the parts catalog? The IO360A3B6 is a different engine than the D. Yet no STC for that. I don’t think you need an STC for most parts originally installed on the same mode of airplane, it’s already type certificated.

  31. A PPI is for risk mitigation. When doing a risk assessment you do not normally attempt to mitigate all risk, only those risks that are both likely and severe. Otherwise the cost of mitigation will exceed the expected expense associated with the risk. Paying a mechanic to inspect every part and system on an aircraft to the level that they will guarantee it is like buying an extended warranty on a $20 toaster. If it helps you sleep at night, go for it but it is unlikely to net you a positive return on your investment.

  33. I’ve flown a twin Comanche. It’s easy to fly but has the annoying piper trim location on the headliner. The cabin really isn’t much if any bigger than a mooney. If you want to fly a light twin for fun on a budget, not a bad pick. I’m a fan of those engines. Single engine service ceiling is 5800’ DA if I recall correctly. With two people up front and full fuel, it will climb reasonably on one engine at 4000’ on a standard day. I wouldnt pay a penny more than $60k. Any more and you’re getting into baron55 territory. The gear system on the Comanche is cable and pulleys. Most other twins like barons have hydraulic gear systems.

  35. Ihave to put in a good word for the Seneca II. I owned and flew one for 10 years and 1400 hours. It is a practical transportation airplane. Has lots of useful load, a roomy cabin and plenty of baggage space (nose and rear) The rear door makes boarding passengers easy and it is quiet in flight. Very stable on instruments. Docile on one engine and a low VMC of 66 knots. Has good short field performance and a single engine service ceiling of 13,000 +. You wouldn't enjoy doing chandelles or lazy 8s in it but for a practical transportation airplane it is hard to beat.

  36. You need to use dental terms when answering Peter Garmin. Peter - I think a PPI is like a 6 month dental exam. Everything discovered during the visit is either treated or identified as a watch area. Let’s say you do the x-rays and don’t see anything on them or your visual inspection. Now 2 months later one of your patient’s molars chip and now requires a crown at a minimum. Who should pay for this? You because you should be a soothsayer and predict the impending tooth failure? 37. I didn't cancel, but I downgraded my subscription to the $9.99 boaters subscription when I got ADSB-in. I like having backups and the cheap boaters subscription still gets me all the METARS and low res radar and a few other things. I think its worth the 9 bucks but would get the basic aviation version if they offered a cheaper package.

  40. with the GTN750 and the Aera660 the iPad really can be left in the bag. Useful to view an approach plate, or free hand a route change, but otherwise, not needed. I'm definately NOT this badass, he has TWO iPads and stil has to hit confirm on his iFD440.

  42. Actually it only happens to people who don't have Aspen or Garmin glass in their Mooneys. Those are the best kind of experts. LOL

  43. Nor have I in at least a dozen planes I have been in that are so equipped. It must be a phenomenon that only happens to pilots who dont fly with an Aspen.

  44. I’ve recently added SVT and can’t say I noticed a difference between it on and it off. And I can’t say I have seen any jumpy refresh rates either. I have several YouTube videos posted under Marauder92V, you be the judge. My units were installed in 2012. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk Pro

  45. I don't have SV on my Aspen so can't speak to that. I do have the AOA for what it's worth. Mine is certainly "fluid" smooth. There is no perception of the screen refresh at all.

  46. If you’re at DA / MDA and going missed — focus on power, pitch and getting a positive rate. Leave the gear down. Fly Vx of 80 mph in the C. Follow the MAP. At a safe altitude pull up the gear. At 200’ above the ground a destabilizing action (levering the J bar) is not smart, and is not necessary: The C climbs ok at 80 mph gear down or up. That’s what I did in my two J bar Mooneys: P-P-P. Power, Pitch, Positive rate.

  47. I was just up this weekend in my "C", doing the break in on my engine, I was very happy with everything especially my speeds. I was indicating an average of 143kts at 4500ft, 25 squared. I let my garmin calculate my TAS and it was telling me 154kts. Even at 6500 ft I was in the yellow still indicating above 140kts. I added the cowl closure while the engine was out and did some minor clean up of parasite drag, the combination of all of the work probably increased my airspeed by about 10 knts.
