  1. Thanks to RSHERRELL who posted a thread about an issue he was having with a Top End Overhaul. What was discovered is that Lycoming issued a Mandatory Service Advisory last year that called out a factory specific cylinder kit recall under warranty for the TIO-540-AF1B engines. Ricky (RSHERRELL) was affected by this very recently, so there may be others that could use this information. I was surprised that I had not seen this until now so I thought I would pass it along. To summarize on the AF1B portion of the bulletins, Lycoming discovered a potential casting flaw that possibly could cause a porosity issue with some factory-made cylinders that shipped with 8130 forms dated between the period of September 18, 2013 and May 28, 2015. I spoke with Frank at Lycoming this evening and as always, he and they were exceptional at proving information and guidance on this subject. Frank stressed that Lycoming’s quality assurance process identified a possible safety issue, with no confirmed failures reported, in certain cylinders when they are fitted to the very high performance engines such as the AF1B. “Out of an abundance of caution”, Frank explained that Lycoming would like to replace these cylinders under warranty. (The thread will enlighten people as to what to watch out for in terms of warranty coverage) Mooney M20M owners should come familiar with the following two Service Advisories: SA-149 SA149 Cylinder Replacement (1).pdf lists only two (2) Lycoming Factory engine serial numbers that are affected RL-9239-61A RL-9344-61A These two AF1B engines were built at the factory and shipped to be used in Mooney M20M models. If you own either of these engines, you should contact your favorite A&P and assess the SA’s recommendations as all 6 cylinders are affected. SA-150 SA150 Cylinder Replacement(2).pdf is more far reaching. It lists the part number of a factory cylinder kit (one cylinder per kit) 05K22177 that contains the affected assembly if it falls into the proper date range and has the identified casting stamps. If you purchased one or more cylinder kits for your M20M and those were factory kits from Lycoming during or around the date period shown in the SA, you should also seek the advise of an A&P so that you can identify whether or not one or more cylinders on your engine are affected. I asked if Frank knew how many of the affected assemblies were shipped to the field, and he did not immediately have that answer. I also got the impression that this recall was very much precautionary at the time and not imminently posing a critical problem. If you would like further information, the SA lists the phone number for Lycoming Field Service. For the purpose of MooneySpace, I would be interested in hearing from anyone that finds an affected assembly installed on their aircraft based on this post. And also from anyone who has already replaced a cylinder under this SA. Best regards DVA

  3. There is a mod to take out the middle piece of alum skin on the Fs and put a full length window in there.... The throttle quadrant with the landing light on the throttle is the one you want.... just in case you get too close for missiles and have to switch to guns

  5. I don't get it. When I left home at 18, all I had was a bus ticket, a scholarship and a suitcase. That was it!!! When my youngest decided to go to college, my girl had us rent a freaking van to schlep all his stuff to his dorm!! We drove him the four hours to his residence and then gave him a credit card to buy groceries (he had already paid his tuition and housing fees himself). What have we done???? No wonder the world is full of Gen X'rs and Millenials who have such a high sense of entitlement. We did this.

  6. I'm posting this on this page for a couple of reasons. First and foremost is to share my ADS B conversion report. I have a Garmin 400W and purchased a KT 74 mode S a few months ago. On the day the Rebate program went live, I signed up and got a reservation number. Had the Avionics shop install the following week. Went online to schedule my flight test. Here's where the story gets good. I got a call from an FAA representative in DC. He was beyond helpful. Walked me through the flight check process. I emailed him my route of flight. Flew as planned. The next day, he emailed two documents - the expanded report and the Four Box report of the system. A confirmation code came with the report. I went to the rebate site and entered the code. My check arrived yesterday! As much grief as we seem to have with the Feds, they have gotten this program right. Mr. Usmaan Javed in DC was the consummate professional. What a pleasant experience. If you haven't applied for the rebate yet, do it now!

  8. I installed one of these..works great and has a dimmer/on/off built in. Runs low volt off USB port. Tried it the other night..worked excellent. Adhere to bottom lip of glareshield. White/ red or green.

  11. I have been using Strikefinders or Stormscopes since the the 90's. I had a Stratus and found the weather it provided invaluable in some ways but when the chips were down current lighting data was what I relied on. You are required to learn to interpret the data and they does take awhile but I think going ahead would be to your benefit. I had a T210 with a srtikefinder in it and flew it for 15 years. There were many occasions that it prevented excessive sweating.

  13. I signed up this spring when it was first introduced. Ended up using it on my to KOSH after an exhaust leak was found. It was a great experience, they worked with the mechanics on the field where I landed, determined that it was airworthy to fly to KOSH, checked on me when I got to KOSH and helped guide the repair. Could not be happier. I also use the analysis pro for a few years. DVA

  14. Yes indeed. The servo clutch will soak that stuff up like crazy. And just covering the servo with a plastic bag isn't enough. You have to wrap it thoroughly and tightly closing every little opening. And I wouldn't open it back up for a good while. Don't ask me how I know this. The good news is that the "fog" gets into places you wouldn't believe and really does protect you from corrosion.

  16. It definitely speeds up the learning curve and also helps me keep my eyes out of the cockpit while flying (instead of engaging in "Avionics 101" at 150 kts).

  17. See what bulb you need. I've got a whole baggy full of bulbs that were removed from my panel upgrade. Kick a little postage at me and I'll send you several of whatever you need. They are just in my "bag of whatever" leftovers. -Tom

  19. Well it has finally arrived. That day when baby was left at the airport ready for her major surgery. She is being completely stripped down to bare metal, then a full re-spray. At the same time the interior is being removed and shipped to aero comfort for them to work their magic. I feel like a nervous parent whose child has just gone into Theatre for an operation. I almost cried when I left her on Friday. She is in good hands I know, but worrying never the less. Attsched is the last photo of her in her old paint scheme, and old interior. Andrew

  20. I've gotta say those guys like Steveo and Flight Chops do a lot of work to get their videos so polished. Here's a video I made of a trip to take some tests in OKC. Seemed like Wiley Post was having radio problems that day. I want to work on a couple things like a good beginning and end. Also try to change the screen that shows in the preview...for example, it shows me craning around to see the runway. I'm sure it's in the software. 'Had a lot of fun though! Tim

  21. When I had the panel redone I had the MidContinent MD93 Digital Clock/USB Charger unit installed on the far left of the panel. In my situation it worked out well just plugging the LED USB into the USB on the clock. Output V of the USB is 5v per USB. The power-cord with the dimmer is plenty long enough to use the regular cig lighter with USB adapter port. It would still make for a very clean install. -Tom

  23. Not thrilled with mine. Just a bit too big and heavy. I had to put something in as my A&P broke one during the time period parts weren't easy to get.... Unless they've changed I don't recommend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  25. Very true, that's because 4 (si) is very close to the word death in Chinese (si) - only the accent or tone on the i is different between them. Indeed, if he was, he wouldn't have that N number. It wouldn't exist in China since Tetraphobia is very real in China. Chinese even avoid telephone numbers with 4 and building's skip the 4th floor and 14th etc, like we skip the 13th floor. On the other hand, their lucky number is 8; Chinese phones numbers with 8 are in demand. My Chinese cell number has several 8's!

  28. Not that you should ever need teflon tape on the fuel fittings, even in home plumbing you should know how to do it right.. starting 2 threads back from the end so you don't cut if off and send some downstream.

  31. Teflon tape for sealing is not on the Mooney acceptable parts list. It has a tendency to show up down stream where it doesn't belong. Real Mooney parts do not require Teflon tape to seal properly. If tape is needed, the part probably has been damaged. Try to find out which shop did this, so you can avoid them.   35. Have you carefully checked the bulb sockets. You might try removing all the bulbs and seeing if it still blows, and if not, replacing them one at a time to see which socket. I hope these are cheap fuses. Or you can use an ohmmeter.

  36. I think part of the problem is they sometimes have you over a barrel. If you are looking for new avionics, you can shop to your hearts content. If you are 500 miles away from home and the starter doesn't turn over and there's only one maintenance shop on the field, you are screwed.

Older thread but just in case.....We did entetain the partner idea when we first acquired it but due to flying so much (190 hours in last 12 months) N231DH did not work out for partnership and was far cheaper to own than i imagined. Furthermore will be going up for sale soon as we went under contract on a CE421 and it will be out of annual end of the month (assuming all goes well).... Happy to show you the plane though if any interest, hangared at KHYI. Once the 421 is here will be getting rid of 1DH pretty quickly. Great plane with lot of redundancy and recent Don Maxwell annual. Not one item deferred, have all receipts for work done with clean logs. PM me for cell #

  38. I think the asking price is way too high on this plane. 59k and no WAAS GPS? I'd also bet there was a prop strike or some sort of damage history. I wouldn't personally offer more than 35k for this bird given the current market. If an IFR WAAS GPS isn't that important to you, 40k is doable, but given the seller's super high asking price, I really doubt you'll come together on a deal on this plane. My advice: keep looking.

  41. Everyone has said it and it is my personal experience as well. I earned the PPL in the rental C172. I had already bought the Mooney and transitioned the following week to my M20F. I agree with the advice to get the PPL in the rental C172. Now I have 13 hours solo time in my Mooney!

  42. I popular option near me for exhaust repair work is http://www.customaircraft.com/ But they are not an FAA repair station, so you will not get a 337 form back with the repair. They actually used to be years ago, but the FAA requirements to separate their experimental work from certified work made it too difficult for them and they dropped their FAA status. So you would have to rely on your A&P's approval of the work. I will add they do a lot of repairs for certified aircraft including even the military. Plus they have made the very repair you need now a number of times - unfortunately its very common. Make sure the installer follows the maintenance manual on re-installing the heat shield not to tighten both fasteners tightly; one side needs to have some play as the exhaust pipe expands with heat.

  44. (Insert Anthony disclaimer here) What kind of starter do you have? Impulse coupled, retard breaker or SOS? Hot starts will always be a bit tricker but should be not so much of an issue for a carbureted O-360. Reason I ask about the type of starter is that if it's a light weight high speed starter you might be getting enough prop RPM during a hot start to retract the pawls on your impulse coupling if that's what you've got ... which means your timing would be too advanced for starting... until you release the starter circuit on the ignition. Then the prop slows and you catch. Are you getting a solid and distinctive "clunk" when you turn the prop through by hand? Other think to think about would be an issue with grounding of the Mag. However that the engine catches when you release suggests otherwise. Only need four things to start: air, fuel, compression and spark (and spark timing as a separate concept). Rule out compression, air and fuel and then you're left with spark.

  45. Today was a milestone. Logged 2.0 in the logbook with 8 landings. The first one sucked, and every one thereafter was better. Stalls were a non-event. But boy did you guys not warn me of how much this is a trim-happy airplane. My friend took an awesome picture on my first takeoff: We got her up to 6,000 feet to get a feel for it. The whole time I was behind the airplane playing catch up. I definitely need a few more lessons before I am turned loose. My mechanic will have it for a bit longer as I'm having him putting my intercom in (using a portable unit right now) but I will still be doing lessons from here on out. Overall: WHAT AN AWESOME MACHINE!

  46. You should have suggested they go on ahead. You'll be waiting for them when they pull in after a short flight to Waco in the Mooney. That way you get to stay home an extra day and get things done around the house, etc, etc, etc. ;-)

  47. Absolutely not! LOL's! That was one cultural difference that was very noticeable in China. I saw no obesity there. In fact, Chinese woman are even more preoccupied with keeping their slender figures throughout their adult life. When you include that they tend to be run a size smaller on average, one good thing for them is that they won't find our Mooney's useful load or payload quite as limiting as us Americans' probably do average.

  48. What? They want pictures of cracked and corroded aluminum, airframes in pieces all over the hangar, broken parts and panels with wires hanging out all over the place?? Seems odd... but OK. Wait... do other people post pictures of assembled planes just sitting on the ramp?? Strange, I never thought of doing that.
