  2. You're right- my posts this morning certainly comes off as self righteous and that's certainly not my intent. They were more of an emotional reaction to the though of me doing something like this myself and thinking about the impact on my family. This hit a little close to home. Sorry if it came off the wrong way. I've had a couple of those never again moments; I'm the last guy to throw stones. That said I'll always be my own worst critic. I agree that we should always discipline ourselves, but I would suggest that we take it a step further- we should recognize each others failures as failures and call them as we see them. It's no doubt possible to do that with a little more tact than I exhibited above.

  3. Simply flying the cardinal directions and then averaging the speeds on the GPS is only accurate in a zero wind situation. A three way GPS run with some trig will give a more accurate number. Of course, if you add a fourth leg in there, the accuracy will improve, but either way, there is some trigonometry required to get accurate results. This is covered many times over on aviation forums across the Internet.

  4. Don, I bought the cable directly from Garmin. https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=1083 I figured out the correct pin on the 430W installation manual or owners manual... I can't remember which but likely the installation manual. I think I have an electronic copy at home, or else I googled it at the time and printed out the pertinent content. It was just one pin IIRC that went to the 430W, and then I had to configure the 430W in the setup screens to enable "Aviation Out" as the format on Port Number XX, and similarly configure "Aviation In" on the 496. Note that you can only have one input going to the 496, so it can be flight plan data like I did, or else you could send traffic data from a -330 transpoder or Xaon device for example, but not both. I purchased the correct pin from Digikey too. I think the specs were in the Garmin manual so I could match it. Ring terminals on the power/ground cables allowed connection to an unused circuit breaker and ground. All in all it wasn't terribly difficult, except for the contortionist routine required to work behind a Mooney panel. I did it in less than an hour and my IA signed it off during an annual.
