  1. If I may, 12 yrs out of flying is not insignificant. However, it is NOT a show stopper either! I was in a similar situation when I got my J model couple years ago. The flight skills came right back and your previous Mooney time will be helpful. Older 6-pack panel planes are looking affordable. That's what I got when I purchased, IFR capable and steady, she is my weekly commuting plane. But new avionics is needed for sure and I don't see the 'suits' in DC retracting any of their plans these days. Since I learned on and flew carrier jets with 6-pack type panels, I have upgraded my J with some new stuff but essentially kept the retro look in place. GTN-650 with a squitter ADS-B out transponder, new audio panel and finally got the JPI monitor as well. Took out some pretty old stuff that isn't supported much anymore, that opened up space and now have a mini I-Pad mount in front of the right seat I can use that with a Stratus 2 and get the Wx, traffic, and an emergency AHRS if I really need it in a pinch. Can't give y'all a pirep on it yet, cause crankcase needed a repair and won't have it back for another week or so. Guess I'm just not that into the whole glass thing yet. We have to preach GA to keep it alive. Good going Mooneygirl! I have been doing occasional Pilots-N-Paws missions withou any problems. (Use car seat belt leash and seat cover in back seats, no problems, no crates thus far) It puts GA in a good light. I know there are other ways to spread the 'karma' and emphasize GA, so I encourage looking around. Heck, I even got my sorry mug and a rescued dog on the front cover of Hilton Head Monthly this past July standing in front of my J. Good luck and fly safe.
  2. Thanks to all that replied. I've spoken with my engine shop (Triad at KBUY) and they can put an oil sump heating pad on no problem and affordable. I'll stay away from the dipstick. Fly safe y'all! George L. Cowan N201PV
  3. Ok, thanks much. I will look into the EZ heater. (Currently my engine is getting a look over at DIVCO in Oklahoma for a discovered crank case crack, so I might be in a good position time wise to get a more extensive heater.) All inputs and suggestions welcome! V/r, George L. Cowan N201PV
  4. Than you sir, just looking for variety of options for pre-heating. I concur, an oil pan blanket would probably be one of the better methods. Thanks again, V/r, George L. Cowan
  5. General question, does anyone have advice regarding the engine oil dipstick heaters? Specifically the "Stay Warm" dipstick heater (Aircraft Spruce)? I am looking for something simple in addition to my use of a work light through the cowl flap. I am based in SC & SE NC so harsh temps are relatively rare. Inputs welcome. Thanks to all, fly safe! 6. Fellow Mooney Drivers and Maintenance Gurus, My engine is getting a rebuild and I have access to the firewall and structures of my '77 M20J 201 (serial no 24-0321). May I ask for recommendations for items to clean, inspect, change etc.? Already planning on putting a Whelan LED 14v landing light in, PAR 36 or PAR 46, what does this gang recommend? Also, while I expect a thorough guidance on breaking in the rebuilt Lycoming from Triad Engines, can I get some thoughts on that as well? Other considerations and recommendations are welcome. I'm new to this forum, but have been watching for a little while. Thanks much in advance for your words of wisdom! Very respectfully, George L. Cowan N201PV
