Birthday flight over San Diego Bay

Saturday was my birthday and my best friend came over to hang out for a while. We ended up taking the Mooney up for a quick tour of San Diego. The weather was absolutely beautiful, in the high 70's, but the winds were 070 which is completely opposite of normal so I got to take off and land on RWY6 at CRQ for the first time. Even the controllers were getting it mixed up. So used to saying 24 all the time that they had to correct my landing clearance, and the ATIS recording still said 24 as well. It was a lot of fun though, and we even spotted a group of whales off the coast of La Jolla. They didn't show up in the video that well, but we had a great view.

Thanks for the nice flight and Happy Birthday I know I'm biased but when I think of the incredible flying that can be done in California variety that can't be matched and not to be critical since I'm not doing squat in the vid department but an in cabin view would be a nice addition. EA!

I always think that the in-cabin shots leave a lot to be desired since the view is fairly limited, but I'll see if I can find an angle that works. I like variety too. This is the first video I've edited together with the ATC recording, and it took a lot more time to do, but I think the audio adds a lot to it.

Really nice video!!! I enjoyed watching it, thanks for sharing and belated happy birthday. It is true cabin shots are iffi but if edited they add a personal touch.

I think the hardest part I've had with cabin shots in the past was that I was flying rentals, and was limited to suction cup mounts. Now that I have a bit more freedom I'm sure I can get some better angles. What do you guys think is best to see, the inside (controls, panel, pilot, etc.) or the view outside looking from inside? The exposure on the GoPro kinda makes you pick one or the other.

Power settings with FF data are a few seconds of film that may go well with the different phases of flight.

A small inset/window in the video would suffice...

That would be interesting, but I'd have to find some totally different software to do the whole inset thing. Also I dont use foreflight, if that's what you meant by FF. I could probably get a camera view of the gauges pretty easily, but that would require dedicating one of the 2 cameras to that task. Would be cool for simply documenting performance and flight characteristics, but probably not so great for documenting a scenic flight. In the case of this flight I was throttled back quite a bit, just cruising.

Did my first student pilot solo cross-country into Mcclean-Palomar back in 1983. The Tomahawk I flew didn't quite match your performance though. Sure enjoyed your video. So-Cal was always a scenic area to fly!

Awesome video man. I miss SD like nothing else...sure hope I can move back someday. What type of camera/cameras are you using here and how are they mounted to the aircraft? I have a Contour Pro that I use on my RC place with a stick on mount and I have not had any issues with it so far. I am probably hitting around 100mph+ in a dive and it has never come flying off. I would love to try it with my Mooney as well.
