G1000 Engine Data logging in Ovation 2 ?

I look after a friend's Ovation 2 and read that the G1000 is capable of data logging to an SD card after a software up-date that came out about 4 years ago for the Diamond DA series aircraft.

 

Does anyone have any information on this as pertains to the Ovation 2 ?

I believe you take out the upper right data card out and download it..you can go on savvy Mr Busch's website and that may provide inst. I gave Mike a call awhile ago for inst. and he e-mailed me back. Also send the info. To mike Busch and he will provide ongoing analysis.

On the mfr the card. In the upper right corner you use to download nav data, is used for the collection of engine info. The bottom cards are used for other than nav data..There are 2 card slots on both the mfd and PDF..grab your G-1000 owners manual for guidance

"Remove the top SD card from the mfd. take it home and plug it into your computers card reader..upload the data to Savvys engine monitor data analysis at savvy analysis.com .if you do not have an account it's still free. Log in set up account and download click on upload new. In the menu .click on ad folder on the sd card select the log file you want to unload. You can also zip the file.be sure to return the sd card back to your mfd prior to next flight...

Thanks again DanB , but there do you know which G1000 software Version  supports the data logging ?

 

I'm quite happy to pop a SD card in the empty slot  in the MFD, just don't want to waste too much time & energy if something else is needed .

Your post got me to research this a bit.  My 2005 O2 is stuck on software 0401.30 and from what I read the rev to add the data logging is in the 05xx.x range around 2010.  Also, you merely need place a card in the top MFD slot and it automatically writes csv files to the SD card every so often.  I will pull my card and see if any files are on it but I highly doubt it.  I currently have a card in that slot with my custom check list.  Mooney needs to come forth now that they are in operation and help update the GX fleet of avionics.

Russ - That is basically what I thought the situation, that is that Mooney has to work with Garmin to bring out the latest software up-date that incorporates the Data Logging Feature.

 

Do you have a contact @ Mooney Inc that can address this issue for us ?

Oh, there is interest...I was hoping when the topic showed up again someone had some answers. When I was purchasing my O3 I talked to Paul Keener at Mooney. He is the one who seems to be tracking issues related to bringing the earlier G1000 systems into the modern world, giving them WAAS capability with the S-TEC 55X and also ADSB.

 

The thing to do is call Mooney HQ and ask to talk to Paul.  If enough people do that hopefully he will keep this at the forefront of their efforts. I know Don Maxwell and others with earlier G-model Acclaims and Ovations are pushing on this.  I just read that Mooney has closed 40 more orders, mostly out of China, so hopefully that means more funding to keep this initiative up.

I find it hard to believe that there is NO INTEREST in this subject ???

 

There is interest I'm sure among the owners of these planes, but numbers-wise, there really aren't many of y'all, and I have no idea how many participate here.  I know I, for one anyway, would not currently buy a GX Mooney due to this issue.  There is no current upgrade path, and if/when Mooney does something it is likely going to cost as much as a complete vintage Mooney.  No thanks.  They should do everyone (and themselves) a favor and bring the avionics package into 2020 compliance for <10 AMU.  

 

I hate that there doesn't seem to be any realistic upgrade path for G1000 Mooneys like the legacy planes have... Aspen, G500, or something to be named later  GX Mooneys are likely stuck with 1990's vintage G1000 forever.

Well Scott, sure hope you are wrong  :)

 

I rolled the dice and did get a G1000/ST55x Ovation; The price difference with the few G1000W/GFC700 Ovations on the market is between $40 and $70k so there is a real discount that can be applied to a future upgrade if/when it comes.

 

I also figured the ADS-B issue would not be a big deal and that various firms would provide options at a reasonable price. That seems to start happening so the main issue left will be getting the Garmin upgraded to WAAS. Would be a bummer if that didn't happen but for those of us not planning on flying hard IFR very often that is an inconvenience, not a deal breaker.

Don't get me wrong, I really really hope a reasonably cost-effective solution comes to market for these planes that are almost orphaned, at least avionics-wise.  As far as I understand it right now, I don't think you can even install something like a GDL 88 into a GX Mooney currently.  I'm not sure if any of the other ADS-B boxes out there currently can connect to a G1000 system either.  And even if they do, I'm sure you would not be allowed to display ADS-B traffic and weather on the G1000 so the only benefit you get is "OUT" compliance.

 

I also presume you're missing out on the wonderful combo of GPSS + WAAS capability for safer single pilot IFR.  I still cannot believe how nice that technology is, and it was relatively inexpensive for me to add to my plane.  It is a shame that it might cost 50 AMU for a GX owner.  (my plane had GPSS, but not WAAS and I got the Garmin deal in 2007 for 3 AMU for a double GNS upgrade)

I was told Mooney is working on it and expect a year or so. No idea on cost and path. My guess probably the minimum to be legal. I was told this by an MSC and Premier Aircraft.

Also, I believe Cessna and Beech and other earlier adopters of the G1000 in 2004-2007 are in the same boat.

I weighed this at length before deciding to purchase my O3. After discussing the situation with Mooney and others in the industry (including Garmin) I decided that it was worth the risk. As Robert has noted, there was a marked price differential between the S-TEC and GFC700 equipped planes so there is room for upgrading if needed.

 

Having flown the plane now and tested several approaches, I've determined that the lack of LPV glideslope capability (which I did have in my J) is not really as big a deal as I thought it would be.  The A/P will still track horizontally all the way through the approach, and with synthetic vision and the altitude preselect feature it's actually darned easy to program in the descent altitudes at each point in an approach and hit them easily.  So I give up a few hundred feet of altitude by not going to an LPV, but I'm not a "hard" IFR flyer anyway so if the ceilings were that low I probably wouldn't be in it...or I can go find an ILS somewhere.

 

That said, we still do have the ADS-B requirements hanging over our head, but I'm confident this will get resolved.

I was asked to look at a Beech w early G1000 and they're was a WAAS up-grade available - IIRC it was something outrageous like  40 - 50 AMUs !

Mooneys are being shipped with version 0401.34 of the G1000 software. We have been told by both Mooney and Garmin that a new version will be released. Installation instructions will be via a Service Bulletin. We will ask Tom Bowen for an update while he's at the Mooney Summit III (October 1-4, 2015) in Panama City Beach. Earlier this year, neither company provided details because the software was still "in development."

We spoke with Paul Kehner at Mooney. The current software version on new Mooneys is 0401.34. That's a Mooney version number and not a Garmin version number. (We're trying to get more on that from Garmin.) This version of software supports engine data logging. It also supports the GTX 33ES transponder which is a 1090 ES ADS-B out only unit. 

At the moment, there's a catch. This software was certified on aircraft with the current model of Garmin WAAS GIA 63W GPS receivers. According to Paul, there units are different from the WAAS GIA 63W GPS receivers installed circa 2008. So, in order to take advantage of this new software (or a GTX 33ES transponder), one would have to update the GIAs to the current model.
