NTSB Identification: WPR17LA212 14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation Accident occurred Friday, September 22, 2017 in Glendale, CA Probable Cause Approval Date: 11/15/2018 Aircraft: MOONEY M20E, registration: N34BE Injuries: 2 Minor. NTSB investigators may have traveled in support of this investigation and used data provided by various sources to prepare this aircraft accident report. The private pilot and passenger had planned a round trip personal flight in the pilot’s single-engine airplane. According to the pilot, he had wanted to service the airplane with fuel before the return leg, but he did not do so due to the passenger’s desire to arrive home before a certain time. During the initial descent of the return leg, the engine lost total power. The pilot conducted a series of troubleshooting steps to no avail and then conducted a forced landing onto a residential street and struck trees. Postaccident wreckage examination revealed that both fuel tanks were empty, and although the right fuel tank sustained a small breach during impact, there was no fuel odor at the accident site. A series of brown streaks were observed trailing from an area adjacent to the right-wing fuel sump drain. The sump valve sealant was badly degraded, and it is possible that a small fuel leak had developed at an undetermined time; however, blue streaking would have been more likely if a significant and recent fuel loss had occurred. Further examination revealed no leaks in the fuel supply system or engine. The engine tachometer was tested for accuracy, and no anomalies were noted. During an engine test run, the engine started normally and operated through its full speed range with no evidence of a mechanical anomaly.The pilot had purchased the airplane 5 months before the accident and had been tracking fuel consumption since his purchase. He determined a representative fuel burn rate based on fuel purchases and engine tachometer hour-meter readings. The pilot reported that he did this because the fuel gauges were unreliable, and he did not possess a calibrated dipstick to measure the actual fuel quantities. Using his calculated fuel burn and tachometer reading method, the pilot estimated that he had enough fuel remaining to complete the flight and land with the Federal Aviation Administration-required 45-minute fuel reserve. However, he had performed multiple flights since the last fill up, which included one go-around and a full runway-length taxi earlier in the day. The total time for those flights was near the airplane’s fuel endurance limit when measured by tachometer time, but the fuel consumption was likely higher due to the increased consumption demanded by the engine during the multiple takeoffs. It is likely that the pilot miscalculated the amount of fuel on board before the flight, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and a subsequent total loss of engine power. The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident as follows: The pilot’s inadequate preflight fuel planning and improper decision to not refuel before the flight, which resulted in fuel exhaustion and the subsequent total loss of engine power.

  4. These motors are manufactured by Globe Motors in Dothan Al. I think there is a new version out that has larger shaft. Call the Dothan address and ask for Bobbie Eldridge in the repair station. I worked there for several years before they were bought out by advanced motion.
  5. If you are going to use a pwm signal you basically need an H-Bridge driven at 50% duty cycle. This will set up a zero voltage point that half way between ground and supply voltage. From here you can increase or decrease the duty cycle slightly to generate a positive or negative voltage. The quieter way would be to use a DAC with an amplifier. For what it’s worth Brittain uses an oscillator and transformer with diodes to generate the positive and negative voltages. It’s output voltage is isolated from the input voltage.
  6. Do the financials of Med school still make sense vs a good paying 4 year degree? I looked at this very seriously many years ago and to me it did not when considering then student loan debt and the years of missing salary.
  7. Generally hiring summer interns is a good thing. Shows the company isn’t completely out of money. They are hiring them to complement engineers, not to replace engineers. It’s also a good recruitment tool if every now and then you can convience one to come to work for you after they graduate. We usually keep 10 per semester in our engineering department and offer the good ones full time positions 3-6 months before they graduate. For a few offers have been extended up to 12 months out.
  8. Here is the software you need to spoof a gps. In addition you will need to download labview. Both are offered as a free trial. Then you will need either an Ettus or NI USRP for the hardware.   9. I had a plating problem that was cosmetic at the time with a set of tempest fine wire plugs a few years ago and they immediately sent me a new set. Although I only needed 8 they sent me a box of 12. Good company with good customer service.
  10. In the interest of continuing an interesting discussion... If the owners had sent in their part then the new part looks nothing like it. Likewise if the owner happened to have a drawing to send in the matches the modified part being sold then it seems you would have to had provided the drawing to him originally.

I’m not going to continue the previous direction of this topic but will simply say that if someone has these setting on a shelf already manufactured and waiting for buyers then it would be physically impossible for an aircraft owner who wants to buy one to participate in any of the 5 steps. Unless of course the owner steps into a time machine!
  12. It’s easy to know. Look at your own post. 1st a post saying you were ordering a batch of them then a post showing you had received them from your supplier and had extras offered for sale to anyone who wanted to purchase them. At this point after you received them from your supplier it would be very difficult to make a case that a customer who purchased one of the extras parcipated in the manufacturing process in any way. The problem is with the extras. Also you said these change the angle of the seat. Perhaps you can provide the calculations showing the new loading on all seat members, seatbelts and attach points at this new angle so the people buying them will know the seat will still give the the required level of safety. Seat safety is a big deal and would likely require an STC. Do you hold an engineering degree? I Do. I’ll be waiting for you completed calculations showing how this new seat angle affects the loading of the structural members of the seat.
  13. Below is from the office of general counsel. One of the 5 things must happen for it to be a legal owner produced part. Per previous post it is clear that these were ordered in batches from a contractor and then some were inventoried until sold. Under that secenario it would be physically impossible for any of the following to occur because the parts were already manufactured before the owner became involved. 1. The owner provided the manufacturer with design or performance data from which to manufacture the part. (This may occur, for instance, where a person provided a part to the manufacturer and asked that the part be duplicated.)2. The owner provided the manufacturer with materials from which to manufacture the part.3. The owner provided the manufacturer with fabrication processes or assembly methods to be used in the manufactureof the part. .4. The owner provided the manufacturer with quality control procedures to be used in the manufacture of the part.5. The owner supervised the manufacturer of the part.
  14. How about the ones your taking orders for and shipping directly to mechanics? Could they possibly see this as crossing the line and manufacturing unapproved parts? A point could be made that the only involvement necessary from the owner is a check for $400.
  15. You could use 2 diodes to feed it and provide isolation between the two feed sources. One would feed from the màster switch you mentioned and the other could feed from any of the busses that are hot once the master is on. You might also need a small capacitor to bridge the gap for the few milliseconds between when the master was flipped on and the other busses became hot. The only problem this would cause is the voltage to read .7 volts low on the ground-50.
